ATO PHONE SCAM TARGETING CANBERRANS

ATO Phone Scam

Canberra, please help us spread the word!

We’ve had a number of reports this morning from Canberrans who’ve received a phone call from someone claiming to represent the Australian Tax Office (ATO).

Unfortunately this scam has done the rounds in the past, and it often works like this:

  • You receive a phone call on either your landline or mobile by a person claiming to be from the ATO.
  • You’re told that due to errors on your tax return, a warrant has been issued for your arrest and the police will be called unless you attend the local post office and make an immediate payment.
  • A variation of this scam asks you to purchase a pre-paid debit card, such as a ‘Load and Go’ card.
  • They may request your credit card details or ask you to pay the outstanding amount via a money transfer.
  • If you don’t comply, the callers use an aggressive tone.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to represent the ATO and that you owe money – hang up immediately.

If you have been a victim of a tax related phone scam, report it directly to the ATO by calling 1800 008 540, as your personal details, including your TFN, may be compromised.

If you’ve been defrauded, report it to police on 131 444.
