Man charged after ramming police cars in early morning pursuit
A 30-year-old Hackett man will face court after fleeing from police in a stolen vehicle before ramming two police cars in an incident early this morning.
About 5am (Tuesday, 24 September 2024), police were conducting patrols and observed a stolen grey Audi Q3 parked on the shoulder of the Barton Highway, Mitchell with its engine running.
Police successfully deployed tyre deflation devices before approaching the driver side of the vehicle and finding the man asleep in the driver’s seat.
Officers attempted to arrest him, but he drove off towards Northbourne Avenue, crossing the median strip and driving into oncoming traffic.
Police initiated a pursuit and followed the Audi along Northbourne Avenue and into the CBD.
About 5:45am, police allege the man deliberately drove into a marked police vehicle parked at the intersection of Macarthur Avenue and Northbourne Avenue.
He rammed the vehicle again and reversed into a second police vehicle that attempted to block his path.
The man was removed from the vehicle and searched, with officers locating a crystalline substance, believed to be methamphetamine, on him. During the man’s arrest, a taser was deployed.
The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today, charged with several offences, including three counts of driving a vehicle at police, two counts of damaging a police vehicle, failing to stop for police, driving with a suspended licence, and driving a vehicle without consent.
