Man to face court on serious family violence offences

Facing Court

A 39-year-old man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Friday 26 March 2021) on serious family violence offences.

The man was arrested during a first instance warrant in Bonner yesterday following an alleged family violence incident.

It is alleged in November 2020, the man doused his partner in methylated spirits and threatened to set her alight with a cigarette lighter he was holding in his hand before she managed to flee.

Yesterday, police observed the man in the bushes in a park. Police approached the man and recognised him as the alleged offender. Police directed him not to move as there was a warrant for his arrest.

It is alleged the man verbally threatened police before running at an officer.

Police used a number of tactics including the National Canine Operations and conducted electrical weapon in an attempt to arrest the man.

The man ran from police and officers pursued him on foot. A short time later the man was restrained and arrested.

The man was assessed by ACT Ambulance Service paramedics and transported to hospital under police guard. He was later transported to the ACT Regional Watch House.

The 39-year-old man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today on a number of family violence related charges including, one count of acts endangering life, reckless threat to inflict grievous bodily harm and resist a public official.
