19-year-old arrested for firearm offences

Charged

ACT Policing has arrested a 19-year-old Calwell man after he allegedly brandished a firearm at his neighbour who allegedly yelled at his dog.

About 6.40pm yesterday (Tuesday, 6 December 2022), police received reports of an altercation in the front yard of a Calwell residence.

A black handgun and a tyre iron were allegedly produced by one of the men involved before he fled the scene.

Officers located the man in Hume a short time later and transported him to the ACT Watch House. Subsequent investigations located the tyre iron and firearm at his premises.

The man has been charged with two counts of possessing an offensive weapon with intent and the unauthorised possession of a firearm. He is set to face the ACT Magistrates Court today.

ACT Policing wants to remind the community that there is a permanent firearms amnesty in Canberra.

In the ACT, you can now surrender firearms to police without penalty, for registration, sale or destruction.

Anyone wanting to arrange surrender of firearms or firearm-related items can make an appointment with the ACT Firearms Registry here.
