25 new recruits join ACT Policing

ACT Policing will now have 25 new constables patrolling Canberra’s streets after graduating today (Friday, 10 February 2023) at a ceremony at Government House.  

ACT’s Chief Police Officer Neil Gaughan welcomed the swearing in of the new recruits – aged between 20 and 36 – and said they would be an important addition to the ACT Policing team. 

“Our new recruits will instantly become an integral part of the ACT community working in general duties roles across our five police stations, helping keep Canberrans safe,” Chief Police Officer Gaughan said. 

“The training these 12 men and 13 women have had at the Australian Federal Police College will hold them in good stead in their new careers as community police officers and I welcome them to our team. 

“There is great honour in serving the community the you live in, and these 25 new constables will quickly experience the wide variety of situations and experiences that community policing brings. 

“They will then have a range of local and international career pathways in front of them, as their experience in ACT Policing and the Australian Federal Police grows.” 

Serving the community is a sentiment shared by new Constable Jaxon Tennent who worked as a lifeguard before applying to join to become a police officer. 

"I always knew I wanted to work in the emergency services, but I wasn't sure of the exact path until a few years ago. The breadth of work you can experience in community policing really excites me and I'm looking forward to hitting the streets,” Constable Tennent said.
