ACT Policing pleased with crowd behaviour

Media release

ACT Policing is pleased this morning’s protests in Canberra marked Australia Day in a peaceful and respectful manner.

After several weeks of planning in consultation with the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, ACT and Federal Governments Departments, Police operations ensured the safety of the Canberra community and important landmarks in Parliamentary Triangle.

ACT Policing would like to thank the Canberra community and visitors to the region for their cooperation.

More than 150 ACT Policing and AFP personnel have been deployed to scheduled events across the ACT.

Police escorted protest marches from Civic to Australian Parliament House, Old Parliament House and the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, ensuring minimal disruption to traffic along the route.

Police were not required to respond to any major incidents and so far there have been no arrests.
