ACT Policing search for AMC detainee

Police Operation

ACT Policing is searching for 28-year-old man who escaped custody from an ACT Corrective Services transport vehicle this afternoon.

At about 4.10pm, police received multiple calls regarding a white Jeep 4WD ramming an ACT Corrective Services transport vehicle on Oxley Street in Griffith.

The man, who was handcuffed at the time, left the scene with a female driver in the Jeep. The Jeep was later located alight on Nares Crescent, Forrest at about 4.50pm. The car fire was quickly extinguished.

The man and woman have not been found at this time.

The man is of Caucasian appearance, with brown hair, hazel eyes, 193cm (6’3”) wearing a blue jumper and blue tracksuit pants. He has a distinctive ‘rats tail’ at the back of his head and has tattoos on his right upper arm.

The woman is described as being in her 20’s with long, straight mousy-blonde hair and wearing a black face mask.

If either of these people are located – people are urged not to approach them and call police immediately on 131444.

Detective Acting Inspector Shane Scott said three Corrective Services officers were treated at the scene by ACT Ambulance Services for minor injuries.

“The transport vehicle was followed from Hindmarsh Drive, and the corrective services officers were taking evasive action for theirs and the detainee’s safety,” Detective Acting Inspector Scott said.

“This was a brazen attack which could have had very serious consequences for the people in the both cars, and potentially other motorists.

“Police have numerous resources throughout Canberra searching for the detainee and other offenders involved – our priority is to return this man to custody immediately.”
