ACT Policing support and changes to service during seven day lockdown

ACT Policing is supporting the community to comply with new health directions that will come to effect from 5.00pm today (Thursday, 12 August 2021).

Police will be redirected from some operations to assist in conducting COVID-19 health directions compliance.

“We expect that the community will do the right thing and follow the important changes announced today,” said Chief Police Officer for the ACT Neil Gaughan.

“Our enforcement has not stopped since the COVID-19 pandemic began and recently we’ve increased activities while carefully monitoring the changing situation in other states.

“During the next seven days, we will take an education approach to ensure the community is complying with the restrictions but we won’t hesitate to fine or arrest those blatantly or deliberately doing the wrong thing.

“ACT Policing members will be out in our community conducting compliance checks for those in quarantine and on the road conducting traffic stops to ensure people have legitimate reasons for being in the ACT.

“It is important people adhere to the rules because the better we do now, the quicker we can get back to normal.”

A number of changes to police activities will be in effect until 5.00pm, Thursday, 19 August:

  • Police stations: Only attend the station for urgent matters or to report for bail. A number of services have been suspended - no fingerprinting or Justice of the Peace services are being conducted. Instead, for non-emergencies please call 131 444 and for emergencies please call Triple Zero (000). Persons attending police stations to meet bail requirements will still be facilitated.
  • Exhibition Management Centre: The centre and the Firearms Registry (including for the National Firearms Amnesty) will be closed. Any urgent matters, please contact the ACT Policing Exhibit Management Centre.
  • Events: Attendance at community events and engagements have been suspended.
  • Constable Kenny Koala: Visits to schools and other locations have been suspended.

We ask that anyone unsure of the current restrictions, or who believes someone may be breaching restrictions, first check the ACT COVID-19 information page. It will have the most up to date information for Canberrans.

For general enquiries – including to make reports of non-compliance, contact the COVID-19 Helpline on 6207 7244 (8am-8pm, 7 days a week). For police assistance call 131 444 and only contact Triple Zero (000) for emergencies.

ACT Policing will continue to act on the most current health advice, and review our practices for the safety of our members and community.
