ACT Road Policing conduct morning enforcement activities

ACT Road Policing officers have conducted early morning speed enforcement activities on Canberra roads this week.  

On Tuesday morning (19 July 2022), officers were conducting speed enforcement activities on the Monaro Highway, Hume.   

A Honda motorcycle was detected travelling at 104km/h in an 80km/h zone. Checks confirmed the man was riding with an expired learner’s licence and had not reported his change of address to the RTA.  He was issued cautions and infringement notices totaling $1854 and 3 demerit points. 

In the early hours of yesterday morning (Wednesday, 20 July 2022) officers conducted enforcement activity on the Barton Highway, Monaro Highway and Isabella Drive where they issued a number of Traffic Infringement Notices including:  

• 6 TINs for speeding between 15 and 30 km/h in excess of the speed limit,  
• 1 caution for not being able to produce a driver's licence,  
• 1 caution for driving uninsured,  
• 1 TIN for driving an unregistered vehicle,  
• 1 TIN for driving unlicenced, and  
• 1 TIN for failing to notify the RTA of a change in address.  

Police also conducted 7 random breath tests with no drink drivers identified.  

One driver was stopped by officers for driving at 125km/h in an 80km/h zone on the Barton Highway, Crace. The BMW driver told officers that he was “running late to work”. Police issued a Traffic Infringement Notice for exceeding the speed limit between 30 km/h and 45 km/h resulting in a $700 fine and 4 demerit points.  

Detective Acting Inspector Paul Hutcheson says that there is no excuse for speeding or ignoring road rules.  

“Drivers can expect to be stopped anywhere and at any time when they are doing the wrong thing on our roads,” acting Inspector Hutcheson said.  

“Speeding remains one of the “fatal five” contributors to serious and fatal road collisions. We urge each and every driver to consider the risk they are placing themselves and other road users at, when they speed.”
