Canberra City Incident

One man has died and another man is in custody following an incident in the City this morning.

About 9.45am today (Saturday, 4 December 2021) police received a call to assist following reports of a man collapsing near a café in Garema Place.

Despite first-aid efforts from members of the public, police and ACT Ambulance Service officers, a 29-year-old man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

At this time police believe an altercation occurred near the area where the man collapsed.

One person has been arrested in relation to the incident however no charges have been laid at this time.

Police are collecting CCTV and speaking to witnesses in an effort to confirm the exact circumstances of the incident.

Anyone that witnessed the altercation prior to 9.45am this morning who has not already spoken to police, is urged to come forward.

ACT Policing would also like to acknowledge that the deceased man was indigenous and on behalf of ACT Policing we express our sympathies to ACT’s indigenous community. We recognise today’s incident will come as a shock and we will provide support to the family and friends of the man who died.
