Canberra drivers behaving badly

Several Canberra drivers will have fines to pay after a weekend where ACT Policing’s Road Policing officers responded to multiple offences.

Yesterday (Sunday 15 November 2020) police detected a 50-year-old man travelling at double the speed limit, 180km/h in a 90km/h zone, on William Hovell Drive.

Earlier in the day, police had detected a 23-year-old man travelling at 168km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Monaro Highway.

Both drivers were issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice for $1841 and 6 demerit points.  

About 9.20pm, police were conducting proactive patrols of Canberra Avenue, Fyshwick when they observed a passenger standing up through the open sunroof of the silver Subaru Liberty.

The driver was issued two Traffic Infringement Notices (TINs) – for driving with a passenger 16 years or older not wearing a seatbelt properly adjusted/fastened and driving a motor vehicle with a passenger body part outside the vehicle window/door ($705 and 3 demerit points).

The passenger was also issued with two TINs totalling $705 for their seatbelt not being fastened and for travelling with a body part outside the vehicle.

Road Policing’s Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman said some drivers have total disregard for the road rules and the safety of other road users.

“The speed limits are set to ensure everyone’s safety on our roads. When we see drivers doing double the speed there is a real chance of a serious collision involving innocent people, said Detective Inspector Boorman.

“As for standing up through the sunroof of a moving car, what can I say? There’s no excuse for it. It’s dangerous, and it’s stupid.”
