Dangerous drivers receive penalties

Several drivers are paying the price for being caught illegally hooning in Canberra.

At the launch of the dangerous driving month-long safety campaign this week, ACT Road Policing Detective Acting Superintendent Donna Hofmeier warned infringement notices would be issued to drivers whose hooning and burnout activities had been publicised on social media.

ACT Policing has now issued 12 Traffic Infringement Notices (TINs) to six drivers from both the ACT and NSW for the following offences committed in the ACT:

•       8 X Improper Use (Burnout) Section 5B(2) Road Transport (Safety and Traffic Management) Act 1999 ($675 fine and 3 demerit points)

•       2 X Drive Unregistered Motor Vehicle Section 18(1) Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Act 1999 ($675 fine)

•       2 X Use Uninsured Motor Vehicle Section 289(1) Motor Accident Injuries Act 2019 ($903 fine)

Police patrolling Canberra’s roads are also targeting speeding as part of dangerous driving focus.

About 9.50pm on Wednesday 5 April 2021, police detected a white Mitsubishi Magna overtaking other vehicles while travelling southbound on the Majura Parkway at 146km/h in the 100km/h zone.

The driver, a 44-year-old man from Charnwood, was issued a TIN for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h. He will be fined $1841 fine and accrue 6 demerit points. The man already had eight points on his licence, so he will lose his licence for 3 months.

Police also noticed the driver had a seven-year-old child in the vehicle, and committed the offence on wet roads with poor lighting.

Police are urging the community to report incidents of dangerous driving, including hooning, burnouts, and drivers running red lights to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
