December message - don’t drink and drive

Drink Driving

As the Christmas holiday season approaches, ACT Policing is turning its road safety focus for December to drink driving.

Police will be targeting people who choose to drink and drive this month as part of the joint road safety campaign with the ACT Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate.

ACT Policing Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Detective Acting Inspector Paul Hutcheson said the best option for drivers was to choose to drink or drive, but not both.

“The message is simple – if you’re drinking alcohol, don’t drive,” Detective Acting Inspector Hutcheson said.

“If you have been drinking, and you aren’t sure if you should drive, then don’t. Find another way home. Use public transport, a taxi, or a ride sharing service.

“If you choose to drive after drinking, or taking drugs, you’re taking unnecessary risks with your life, your passengers’ lives, and the lives of other road users.

“We will be conducting random breath test operations across December, so people should expect to see police anywhere, anytime.”

Between 1 January 2021 and 28 November 2021, ACT Policing has laid 721 charges for drink driving and 457 charges for drug driving.
