Double demerits cost speeding Lawson motorcyclist his licence

A Lawson motorcyclist became one of the first ACT drivers to lose double demerit points and subsequently his licence ahead of this Labour Day long weekend after being caught riding at 138 km/h in a posted 80km/h zone overnight. 

At around 12.20am this morning (Friday, 30 September 2022), ACT Policing officers undertaking speed enforcement checks northbound on William Hovell Drive in Aranda spotted the P-plater speeding on a Green Kawasaki 400cc motorcycle. 

When his speed was checked, the 49-year-old man was caught riding at 58km/h above the posted speed limit. 

When officers spoke to the man, he indicated that he just wanted to get home quickly and there wasn’t much traffic on the road.   

With double demerit penalties having started at 12am this morning, the rush to get home has cost the 49-year-old 12 demerit points, an $1841 fine and a licence suspension for at least 3 months. 

Canberrans are reminded the double demerit period stays into effect until 11.59pm on Monday, 3 October 2022.
