Two Canberra drivers were caught double the limit over the weekend – one more than double the speed limit, the other more than double the alcohol limit.

About 5.25pm Sunday, 4 June 2023, a 21-year-old Belconnen man was detected on a motorcycle travelling at twice the posted speed limit on Ginninderra Drive, Latham.

The man, who held a learner licence, was detected travelling at 160 km/h in the sign-posted 80km/h zone.

He was issued a $1,841 fine and six demerit points, while his motorcycle licence will be suspended for three months.

He allegedly told police he was speeding because it was an open road and he was having a bit of fun.

In a separate incident, about 10.20pm Saturday, 3 June, a 24-year-old Coombs woman was observed driving on the wrong side of Phillip Avenue, Downer.

She was stopped by police and breath analysis recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.105, which is more than twice the legal 0.05 alcohol limit.

Her right to drive in the ACT was immediately suspended for 90 days, and she will face court charged with drink driving at a later date.

On the weekend 3-4 June ACT Road Policing issued a total of 72 traffic infringements, 18 traffic cautions, 18 defects notices, and conducted 289 random breath tests and 17 roadside drug tests.
