Driver arrested after colliding with tree while trying to evade police

Arrested

A 27-year old Taylor man who police allege accelerated heavily towards a police vehicle before colliding with a tree and then trying to escape by foot will front the ACT Magistrate’s Court today.

At about 11.20pm last night (Sunday, 2 October 2022), ACT Policing officers attempted to stop a grey Ford Falcon in the suburb of Ngunnawal.

After police activated their warning lights, it is alleged the driver of the Falcon drove up a gutter and onto a nature strip to try and evade police.

It is then alleged the driver lost traction of his vehicle, before spinning 180 degrees. Police will then allege he accelerated heavily towards a police vehicle before losing control of his car and colliding with a tree. He then tried to escape on foot before being caught approximately 50 metres away.

The man was then arrested where he told police he had used methamphetamine about three hours before the incident.

Further investigations revealed the man was driving his father’s vehicle without his consent.

He is facing six charges, including aggravated furious/reckless driving, failing to stop for a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, breaching good behaviour obligations, taking a motor vehicle without consent and driving with a prescribed drug.
