Evatt man who tried to evade police at high speed to face court

Charged

A 39-year-old Evatt drug driver who failed to stop for police after reaching speeds of 200km/h on the Tuggeranong Parkway in the early hours of this morning (Thursday, 14 July 2022) will face the ACT Magistrates Court today.

About 1.00am this morning ACT Policing officers attempted to stop a Holden Statesman on Sulwood Drive in Wanniassa before observing it travelling at 200km/h northbound on the Tuggeranong Parkway.

Police will allege the driver failed to stop for police, before turning onto Ginninderra Drive in Bruce, crossing the median strip onto the incorrect side of the road, and continuing at high speeds in excess of 140km/h in an 80km/h zone.

Police then observed the man driving around Lawson and reaching speeds of 160km/h along Maribyrnong Avenue in Kaleen – nearly three times the posted 60 km/h limit.

ACT Policing officers coordinated a forced stop, and deployed tyre deflation devices at the end of Maribyrnong Avenue which successfully stopped the vehicle, at which time the driver attempted to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended by police officers.

The man is set to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today and has been charged with failing to stop motor vehicle for Police, aggravated furious / reckless driving, driving under the influence of a prescribed drug (methylamphetamine), driving while disqualified and breach of good behavior obligations.

It is alleged that the driver was already disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver's licence for a period of up to four years and is currently on bail with a condition to not drive or be in the driver's seat of a vehicle.
