Four drivers caught for high range speeding on the long weekend

ACT Policing Road Policing members issued 183 Traffic Infringement Notices (TINs) over the Labour Day long weekend, including 106 motorists detected for speeding.

Of those motorists detected speeding, four including a P-plate driver were detected travelling between 30km/h and 45km/h above the posted speed limit during the double demerit period. The penalty in the ACT during the double demerit period for exceeding the speed limit by 30km/h, but less than 45km/h is $700 and eight demerit points.

Road Policing Detective Acting Superintendent Marcus Boorman said overall, most motorists behaved well on ACT’s roads over the long weekend considering the volume of traffic on our roads.

“A small number of motorists chose to ignore the rules with poor driving behaviour and only have themselves to blame. Some of these drivers will undoubtedly have their licences suspended. They put not only themselves at risk, but also other road users,” Detective Acting Superintendent Boorman said.

“We had some minor collisions, however we were fortunate over the long weekend not to experience a major incident or serious collision on our roads.”

ACT Road Policing conducted 1793 road side breath tests, resulting in three drivers testing positive. Road Policing members also conducted 50 road side drug tests, resulting in eight drivers testing positive. The drivers that tested positive will face court at a later date.

With inclement weather forecast for this week, ACT Policing urge motorists to drive to the conditions on the wet roads, leave a greater distance between your vehicle and the one in front and turn your lights on.
