Man arrested after car stolen at gunpoint

Arrested

ACT Policing today arrested a 32-year-old Crace man who allegedly stole a car from a Watson residence this morning (Monday, 1 May 2023).

About 8.30am, police received a report that a man wearing dark clothing and with his face covered had threatened a woman at the residence with a firearm, demanding the keys to a Tesla parked at the residence.

The victim was able to provide location updates for the car, and an initial attempt to intercept the vehicle in Downer was unsuccessful. Police then engaged in a short pursuit, which was abandoned due to safety concerns for other road users.

Officers from ACT Policing Criminal Investigations, Operation TORIC, City Station, Gungahlin Station, Family Violence, and AFP Specialist Response established a cordon in Ainslie, where the man was arrested and the vehicle recovered about 9.05am.

The man will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow (Tuesday, 2 May 2023) charged with aggravated robbery, driving a stolen motor vehicle, furious driving, and fail to stop for police.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have dash-cam footage of the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or on the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote reference 7418622.
