A 28-year-old Spence man on bail for similar offences, will face new charges in court today following his arrest after a dangerous driving incident on Saturday night.

About 8.05pm on Saturday night (21 January 2023) officers attached to Operation Toric observed a red Volkswagen Golf hatchback drive at excessive speed on Kingsford Smith Drive, Latham.

The Golf turned onto Southern Cross Drive and continued to travel at speed (estimated to be in excess of 160 km/h), weaving between traffic and causing other road users to take evasive action to avoid a collision with it.

Soon after, the Golf turned onto Coulter Drive and police activated their emergency lights in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop. The Golf failed to stop and continued driving in a dangerous manner.

A short time later, the Golf failed to negotiate a left hand turn onto John Cleland Crescent, Florey, crossing a centre traffic island and colliding with a gutter. The driver then fled from the scene, jumping a nearby fence.

About 8:30pm, a Florey resident alerted nearby police to an unknown noise in her garage. Officers attended the address and located the driver of the Volkswagen Golf in the garage.

The 28-year-old Spence man was arrested for breaching bail conditions relating to an incident on 23 November 2022. He was also charged with failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, drive while disqualified, and trespass, and is expected to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today (Monday 23 January 2023).
