Man arrested for stealing brass from community park

ACT Policing arrested a 40-year-old man for theft after conducting a search warrant in Kambah yesterday (Wednesday, 4 November 2020).

The search warrant was executed at a residence on Seymour Place in response to theft of brass fittings from Henry Rolland Park, Acton.

The theft was reported to police on Wednesday, 30 September 2020 by the ACT Government. Following a similar theft of brass in 2018, the ACT Government expanded the footprint of the Public Safety CCTV Network to include Henry Rolland Park.

The CCTV footage showed a man removing the brass fittings from the seats located in Henry Rolland Park and leaving in a vehicle, later identified as his brother’s car.

ACT Policing Proactive Intervention and Disruption Team Detective Sergeant Jason Dziubinski said police observed the vehicle believed to be same one used by the man during the theft.

“Brass is a highly sought after item and people buying second-hand equipment of this value should always question where it has come from,” Detective Sergeant Dzibuinski said.

“It is fortunate CCTV is installed at Henry Rolland Park to enhance public safety and help ACT Policing investigate crime. It shows how beneficial CCTV can be to a successful investigation.”

The man was transported to the ACT Regional Watch House where he was charged with theft and bailed to appear before ACT Magistrates Court on Friday 22 January 2021.

The Proactive Intervention and Disruption Team launched in August 2020. It is part of the new Police Services Model focused on early intervention and reducing repeat calls for service, freeing up available resources to support a growing Canberra community.

The team diverts high-risk individuals to mental health and social services, targets known crime hotspots and disrupts recidivist crime to decrease the number of people falling into the cycle of the judicial system. More information on how ACT Policing is keeping Canberra safe under the new model is available on the Police Services Model on the ACT Policing website.
