Man to be charged; use carrier service to harass/offend

A 22-year-old Belconnen man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (23 September) regarding a series of offences involving stalking and the use of a carrier service to harass and offend.

Through investigating this incident, ACT Policing’s Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Team (SACAT) has become aware that there may be further unknown victims deceived through the illegal use of a carriage service.

SACAT Detective Sergeant Rachel Batterham said that ACT Policing is urging anyone who has been a victim of sexual harassment through a carrier service to come forward.

“Through investigating this incident, we believe there may be more victims who were harassed through the use of a carrier service. This could be receiving unwanted, salacious images via messaging, social media or through phone ‘apps’,” Sergeant Batterham said.

“Due to the nature of the incident, there may be some victims who have not yet come forward for fear of potential embarrassment.”

“We would like to assure victims that their confidentiality will be protected and no prosecutorial action would be taken without the victim’s full consent.”

Anyone who has received offensive images or unwanted offers of a sexual nature online or on their phone/mobile device is urged to report the incident to ACT Policing on 131 444.
