Operation Midnight to target alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour
ACT Policing is holding Operation Midnight this weekend, ramping up compliance activities at pubs and clubs across the ACT as the festive season rolls along.
Entertainment precincts and licenced venues will have a high-visibility police presence this Saturday, 17 December 2022, as police target anti-social and violent behaviour.
Police will also engage with licensees regarding the importance of the responsible service of alcohol and strategies to minimise alcohol-related anti-social behaviour.
Officer in Charge of City Police Station, Detective Inspector Stephen Ladd said the operation aims to provide a safe environment for all this holiday season.
“As we move closer to Christmas and New Year’s Eve, we obviously see a rise in parties and end of year celebrations, but as police we also see a rise in illegal and potentially dangerous behaviour,” Detective Inspector Ladd said.
“Ultimately, police want everyone to enjoy a happy and safe festive period. What we don’t want to see people take things too far on a night out.
“Operation Midnight will target alcohol-fuelled behaviour by patrons, not only in Civic but venues right across the Territory, with police conducting walk throughs of licenced premises.
“Police will also be conducting foot patrols of public areas such as Garema Place targeting anti-social behaviour and underage drinking.
“If you come to police attention, you may find yourself with a Criminal Infringement Notice or taken into police custody – which is a quick way to ruin a fun night out.
“ACT Road Policing will also be on the streets, targeting drink and drug driving, and other dangerous driving behaviour.
“I would also encourage licensees to work with police to ensure they are serving alcohol responsibly - irresponsible service of liquor can potentially contribute to incidents of assault, offensive behaviour and drink-driving.”
