Police commuter safety focus on light rail

Commuters - Traffic Focus

This week is National Rail Safety Week, and ACT Policing will conduct operations along the light rail corridor as part of a month-long focus on commuter safety.

Police will be paying attention to all forms of commuter behaviour, including pedestrians and cyclists who are crossing roads to use the light rail, or to cross the tracks.

Drivers are reminded to obey the traffic lights on the light rail network, and to remember light rail vehicles get priority at intersections, which means traffic light sequences can vary.

Office-in-Charge, ACT Road Policing, Detective Inspector Donna Hofmeier said the message this week was all about safety.

“Crossing a road, or the light rail tracks, against a red light is dangerous, irresponsible, and an offence,” Detective Inspector Hofmeier said.

“Regardless of whether the signal relates to crossing a road or crossing the light rail track, everyone must obey the lights and stop on a red signal.

“I know waiting for the lights to change in your direction can be frustrating, but the lights operate to keep everyone safe on the light rail corridor. Please be patient.”

The August 2021 ACT Policing Traffic Focus is a traffic safety campaign focusing on a different group of commuters each week of the month.
