Suspicious fire

ACT Policing is investigating a burglary and suspicious fire in Wright yesterday (Sunday, 13 August 2017).

Around 7.30am, police attended Ulysses Circuit, where a residence under construction was reported to be alight.

ACT Fire & Rescue attended and extinguished the fire. Following an analysis of the scene, police and fire investigators believe the fire to be suspicious.

The residence which is currently vacant, appears to have been burgled prior to the fire. Police believe these incidents to be linked and investigations are ongoing.

Officer in Charge Criminal Investigations Response, Detective Acting Station Sergeant Tony Crocker reminded the community that burglary and arson are serious offences.

“We treat burglary and the deliberate lighting of fires extremely seriously in any premises, regardless of whether it is occupied at the time. Arson has serious consequences, carrying a maximum penalty of 25 years imprisonment.”

“The residence is in a busy area, close to Cotter Road. We believe someone may have noticed some suspicious activity or may have information that could assist us with our investigations. Even the smallest piece of information is worth reporting,” Sergeant Crocker said.
