Police target speeding in February

Speeding motorists are in the sights of ACT Policing this month after more than 3800 drivers were caught during 2016.

Gungahlin Drive, Majura Parkway, Monaro Highway, William Hovell Drive and Belconnen Way were the top five locations where speeding motorists were detected.

Last year more than 890 drivers were caught speeding in school zones, four of which were more than 45 km/h over the speed limit.

Acting Officer in Charge Traffic Operations, Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said speeding motorists are gambling with their lives and the lives of others.   

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. It’s unfortunate that there are some people who continue to speed on our roads, risking not only their lives but those of all road users,” Sergeant Boorman said.

ACT Policing will conduct targeted operations to enforce the speed limit. Drivers caught speeding face fines ranging from $203 and one demerit point, to $1,811 and six demerit points.

Speeding is one of the top contributing factors to deaths and serious injury on ACT roads.

“Last year there were 10 deaths on our roads, which is 10 too many.”

“When we attend a fatality, we always think of the family, how we are going to tell them and how they are going to be affected. As a police officer you never get used to attending fatality, especially when they are caused by preventable reasons like speeding.”

“Speed limits are not optional and there is no excuse for speeding. Road users should make a daily choice to slow down and save lives.”
