As part of our commitment to making ACT roads safer, police officers conducted a series of high visibility operations throughout Canberra this past long weekend (28-30 May 2022).

The road safety campaign focused on random breath tests, drug screen testing and general road safety.

The two-phase operation saw an urban focus and a rural focus with more than 2500 RBTs conducted in both zones and five alcohol impaired drivers identified.

On Monday (30 May 2022) Road Policing officers attended Majura Avenue, Dickson about 1:50pm after a car collided with a light pole. The driver returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.123 (level 3). This is more than double the legal 0.05 limit.

He was served with an immediate suspension notice, suspending his right to drive in the ACT for a period of 90 days and he will attend the ACT Magistrate‘s Court at a later date to face charges in relation to drink driving.

There were also approximately 100 drug screen tests conducted – with six drivers returning positive results.

48 infringement notices were issued as well as 13 cautions.

Detective Acting Superintendent Paul Hutcheson from Policing & Emergency Management and Planning said these road safety enforcements are part of ACT policing’s ongoing commitment to National Road Safety Week.

“Our officers will continue to be out and about to ensure our roads are as safe as possible.”

“We have seen fatalities this year because of poor driving behaviors. We are calling on all drivers to play their part in driving safely and making sure each and every road user gets home to their family and friends.”

Anyone who witnesses poor or illegal driving behavior can be reported to police via ACT Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers.com.au
