ACT Road Policing members conducted target operations on Saturday (6 August 2022) detecting a variety of offences.

More than 700 drivers were subjected to roadside alcohol and drug testing at two sites.

On Saturday morning on Bindubi Street, Aranda, several traffic offences were detected, including two drivers driving with more than the prescribed alcohol limit, one being a provisional driver who was subject to a zero-blood-alcohol limit. Both drivers advised Police they had ‘big nights’ on Friday.

In addition to the drink-driving offences, police identified unsecured loads on trade vehicles, resulting in drivers being fined $612, and an unlicensed driver whose licence had expired was issued a $700 fine.

A mobile phone offence was also detected when a 26-year-old woman was observed by officers using a video calling app while driving into the RBT station. When stopped by police, they saw the app open and facing the driver and the driver said she had been on a video call with her boyfriend while driving. She was issued a traffic infringement notice for using a mobile phone for social networking, incurring a penalty of $612.00 and four demerit points.

In the afternoon, a second site was set up on Beasley Street, Mawson, where another drink-driver was detected.

Separately, Road Policing officers who responded to a two-vehicle collision on O’Connor about 8.10pm on Saturday discovered one of the drivers, a 19-year-old Wamboin (NSW) man was driving despite his licence having been suspended in June 2022.

When subjected to breath analysis the man returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.148. He was served with an Immediate Suspension Notice, suspending his right to drive in the ACT for 90 days. He has been issued with a court attendance notice, to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on 3 November, 2022, charged with level 3 drink driving and driving while suspended.

ACT Policing continues to urge Canberra drivers to do the right thing. Enforcement activities will occur anywhere and at any time, to make our roads as safe as possible.
