Woman arrested for sexually assaulting her 2-year-old granddaughter

Arrested

ACT Policing has arrested a 50-year-old woman after she allegedly repeatedly sexually abused her 2-year-old granddaughter and posted it to TikTok.

Late last month (Friday, 27 January 2023) the Australian Federal Police Child Protection Triage Unit received a report of newly produced child abuse material being uploaded onto social media platforms.

Representatives from TikTok reported the material to the ACCCE and they then assisted with the investigation.

The incident was handed to the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse team and the ACT Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team.

Yesterday, (Sunday, 6 February 2023) officers executed a search warrant at a southern Canberra residence where a woman was arrested.

The woman is set to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court this morning.

She has been charged with aggravated acts of indecency against a child under 10 years, using a child to produce aggravated child exploitation material and using a carriage service for child abuse materials.

Police are urging any victims of sexual assault, including anyone who is aware of intimate images being shared without the subject’s consent, to report these criminal activities.

If you or someone you know has been affected by sexual violence, you can report to police by attending a police station or calling 131444.

You can also submit an online report for historical sexual assault for incidents that occurred more than six months ago.

Note to media: USE OF TERM ‘CHILD ABUSE MATERIAL’, NOT ‘CHILD PORNOGRAPHY’

Use of the phrase “child pornography” benefits child sex abusers because it:

  • Indicates legitimacy and compliance on the part of the victim and therefore legality on the part of the abuser; and

  • Conjures images of children posing in ‘provocative’ positions, rather than suffering horrific abuse.

Each photograph captures an actual situation where a child has been abused. This is not ‘pornography”.
