17 year old arrested by Operation TORIC

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested by Operation TORIC overnight following a short pursuit.  

About 10.15pm last night (Saturday, 29 October 2022) police in an unmarked vehicle on the Tuggeranong Parkway observed a Holden Commodore sedan driving above the posted speed limit, tailgating and flashing its lights at cars ahead of it.  

The police vehicle moved over and observed the Commodore continue to drive erratically along the Tuggeranong Parkway at speed. Adjacent to Aranda, the Commodore was recorded travelling at 155km/h.  

Soon after, police in the unmarked vehicle activated their lights and siren however the Commodore failed to stop. A short pursuit occurred before the Commodore stopped on Gungahlin Drive.  

The 17-year-old driver was arrested and police located three passengers in his vehicle. A check of the Commodore identified both rear tyres to be completely bald. A passenger indicated the driver intended to try and outrun police but was convinced by his passengers to stop.  

The driver refused to undergo a roadside alcohol screening test. He was conveyed to City Police Station where he underwent breath analysis, returning a reading of .110.  

He was subsequently transferred to the ACT Watch House where he was charged with: 

• fail to stop motor vehicle for police; 

• aggravated reckless driving; 

• refuse to undergo screening test; 

• drink driving; and 

• drive unsafely maintained vehicle. 

Since the commencement of Operation TORIC, 122 people have been apprehended and charged with 310 offences. 57 of those apprehensions have occurred in October.
