Double demerit points to be enforced over Australia Day holiday

Double demerits for Australia Day

ACT Policing is urging motorists to drive safely over the Australia Day holiday period (25 to 29 January 2017) and warns that motorists who choose to disobey the road rules, will be targeted.

Acting Superintendent of Traffic Operations Ken Hedges said road safety is a priority for ACT Policing and should be a priority for all road users as well.

"Road safety begins with the person behind the wheel or the rider of the motorcycle. We expect drivers and riders to adhere to the road rules and drive with a focus on being the safest driver they can possibly be.

“Speeding, fatigue and driver distractions are some of the main causes of road fatalities and serious collisions. The ACT road toll currently stands at one and the members of ACT Policing don’t want to be the people who knock on your family’s front door to pass on heartbreaking news.” Acting Superintendent Hedges said.

Double demerit points are effective from the first instance on Wednesday, 25 January until midnight on Sunday, 29 January 2017.

“We want people to have a great Australia Day holiday period, travel safely and arrive at your destination.

“If you are caught for speeding, failing to wear a seat belt or child restraint, using your mobile telephone or riding a motorcycle without a helmet, then expect double demerits points against your licence. All other traffic offences will receive an additional one demerit point.” Acting Superintendent Hedges said.
