Driver attempts to avoid arrest by moving to back seat

A 20-year-old Narrabundah man will face court on five driving offences on Saturday, 23 May 2023, after he allegedly attempted to avoid arrest by moving to the back seat of his car when stopped by police. 

On Friday afternoon, police pulled up behind a black Range Rover Evoke at the intersection of Flemington and Randwick Roads, Lyneham. The Range Rover driver ran the red light, narrowly avoiding a collision, before accelerating away on Flemington Road. 

Police activated their lights and sirens, but the driver failed to stop, driving away at speed and crossing to the wrong side of the road. After the vehicle entered Sandford Street, it came to a stop and officers allegedly witnessed the man moving from the driver’s seat into the back of the car. 

The man was arrested, and police checks revealed he had never held a licence and that he is already awaiting sentencing for a previous charge of driving without a licence. 

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, not stopping at a red light, speeding, unlicenced driving (never held a licence) and breach of good behaviour obligations.
