Drivers urged to drive to arrive as snow season kicks off
ACT Policing along with Toll Driver Reviver are urging drivers to drive safely to arrive safely during the snow season (10 June to 2 October).
Officer in Charge Traffic Operations Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said high-visibility police patrols will target speeding, impaired driving, seatbelt offences and driver fatigue.
“We’ll be joining with NSW Police to target dangerous driving going to and from the snow right across the snow season,” Station Sergeant Boorman said.
“Many Canberrans travel to and from the snow for a well-earned family holiday or just a quick weekend trip. We’re asking that drivers plan ahead, give themselves plenty of time for the trip and plan a break half-way.”
“I know everyone just wants to get there and back as quickly as possible to make the most of their time at the snow, but taking a break half way can be the difference between arriving safely and not at all. Our message is drive safely to arrive safely. Don’t let your holiday turn into tragedy.”
Allan McCormac National Director Toll Driver Reviver said Driver Reviver stops offer motorists more than just a free cup of tea.
“It’s not just the free cup of tea, coffee or biscuit - it’s the opportunity to stop for a bit, let the kids stretch their legs, enjoy a friendly chat with one of our volunteers or take a few ‘selfies’ before your get back on the road. If you’re yawning, rubbing your eyes or restless, then you need to take a break,” Mr McCormac said.
“You can plan you trip by looking for our Driver Reviver rest stops online, including a stop at Michelago about half way between Canberra and the snow. We also have a stop at Collector, between Sydney and Canberra.”
The Queen’s Birthday long weekend marks the start of the snow season and police warn double demerits will be in place from Friday 9 to Monday 12 June, inclusive. Double demerits apply for all speeding, seatbelt and mobile phone offences and one additional demerit point applies for all other offences.
