Four days of double demerits start tonight

ACT Policing is urging motorists to drive safely over the Anzac Day period and with double demerits in place in the ACT for four days for Anzac Day this year.

The double demerit period will begin overnight at midnight and stay in effect until midnight Monday night 26 April 2021. During this period all speeding, seatbelt, riding without a helmet and mobile phone offences will attract double the usual number of demerit points.  All other traffic offences attract an additional demerit point.

ACT Road Policing Acting Sergeant Andrew McKellar said police want everyone to drive safely and be aware of the effects of alcohol and fatigue.

“On Anzac Day there will obviously be people up early for dawn services. If you’re one of them, and you’re planning to drive later in the day, think about fatigue. It will kick in earlier,” Acting Sergeant McKellar said.

“Anzac Day last year was a stay-at-home affair for most people. If you are heading interstate this year commemorate the day with family or friends, make sure you take regular breaks.

“If you are planning to have some rum and warm milk after the dawn service, or a few beers in the afternoon while playing two-up, please don’t drive.”

The ACT road toll for 2021 currently stands at four.
