Incident at Canberra hospital

UPDATE

About 4pm Wednesday 18 July 2018 a 26-year-old man charged with serious traffic offences from an incident earlier this morning was under police guard at The Canberra Hospital when he assaulted ACT Policing members.

During the altercation the offender fired an officer’s weapon. The man was disarmed and restrained by police.

No members of the public or hospital staff were injured. The incident has been contained and there is no further risk to public safety.

This incident at the hospital has been declared a critical incident and, as is standard procedure, AFP Professional Standards attended the scene, and will oversee the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The man is expected to appear in court tomorrow for serious traffic offences and attempted robbery. It is anticipated that further charges will follow regarding the incident at The Canberra Hospital.
