Investigation underway into Rae St explosion

ACT Policing is investigating the cause of an explosion which destroyed several stores and damaged several other properties in Rae St Belconnen about 7.30pm, Monday 27 December 2021.

ACT Fire & Rescue firefighters attended the scene to extinguish blazes in multiple premises. ACT Ambulance Service paramedics also attended, transporting one man to hospital for treatment.

While the full extent of the damage is still being determined, multiple premises were gutted by the fire, and other stores nearby suffered considerable fire and smoke damage.

Several roads in the area were closed, and expected to remain closed into Tuesday morning.

At this stage the cause of the fire is not known, and remains under investigation.
