Man charged after attempted abduction

A 30-year-old Canberra man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Friday, 21 October) charged with attempt forcible confinement, assault and use telecommunication service to menace and harass.

On Wednesday (19 October), ACT Policing released CCTV footage indicating an attempted abduction and sought assistance from the public in identifying those pictured in the footage.

Yesterday (20 October), police received information from a member of the public identifying the victim and the offender in the footage. Police were then able to attend the residence of the victim to check her welfare.

Members from Woden and Tuggeranong Crime, with the assistance of ACT Policing Intelligence, located and arrested the offender.

Detective Acting Superintendent Marcus Boorman has thanked the member of the public who reported this family violence incident to police.

“Many incidents of family violence go under reported to police as some members of the community hold the belief that family violence is a private issue and others shouldn’t intervene,” Detective Acting Superintendent Boorman said.

“If you were home and you looked outside your window and someone was stealing a car, you would call police immediately. We ask you to do the same thing, if you could hear an argument escalating next door or see someone being assaulted, call police.”

Violence inside or outside the home is unacceptable and police are here to help.
