Man to face 19 charges

A 31-year-old man will face court on 19 charges relating to alleged sexual assaults and other offences following his arrest on Saturday.

The man’s former partner attended a police station in early October and provided information relating to a series of sexual assaults and other crimes committed against her during August and September 2023.

The woman alleged that the man:

  • Repeatedly committed sexual assaults against her over a period of two months, including while she was unconscious

  • Threatened to kill her on multiple occasions

  • Repeatedly choked her

  • Forced her to consume illicit drugs

  • Took her money, clothing and other items

  • Used a mobile phone to film some of the alleged assaults.

The woman met the man at the beginning of August when she was homeless and he allegedly abused this situation to continue his crimes against her.

Significant efforts were made by multiple areas of ACT Policing to locate the man during the past three weeks – culminating in his arrest at about 10.50pm on Saturday night after police were called to a home adjacent to his former partner’s residence.

The homeowner had contacted police at about 8.00pm after they heard someone enter their yard and soon after heard noises in the roof cavity of their home. Police located the 31-year-old man in the roof and he eventually surrendered to police without incident.

He was subsequently charged with 19 offences including aggravated intentional threat to kill a person, five counts of aggravated intimate observation or capturing visual data, six counts of sexual intercourse without consent, three counts of chokes, suffocates, strangles another person, aggravated choke a person and render insensible, administer substance dangerous to a person, aggravated common assault and aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The man is expected to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today (Monday 23 October, 2023) where bail will be opposed.
