Man to face court charged with seven offences

A 25-year-old man will appear before court this morning (Thursday, 19 May) charged with several offences including driving while disqualified, possess prohibited substance and fail to stop motor vehicle for police.

About 5.00am on Monday 16 May 2016 a male was sleeping in his Mercedes C200 vehicle when he was approached by two males who threatened him and then proceeded to take the victim’s vehicle.

During the evening of Tuesday 17 May 2016 the vehicle was repeatedly sighted within Belconnen driving in an erratic and dangerous manner. The vehicle repeatedly evaded attempts by police to stop it.

About 9.30pm on Wednesday 18 May 2016, the vehicle was observed in a carpark in Charnwood. When stopped by police a passenger in the vehicle deployed a fire extinguisher at police in an attempt to evade arrest.

When the contents of the fire extinguisher were emptied the occupants fled from the vehicle into nearby parkland and after a foot chase, the driver was apprehended by police.

The offender was subjected to an oral fluid analysis which gave a positive indication for methylamphetamine.

The offender was arrested and charged with failing to stop for police, driving disqualified, drive motor vehicle without consent, resist arrest, drive with prescribed drug in oral fluid, and possess prohibited substance.

Police will oppose bail.
