Man facing Court charged with strangulation

Facing court

A Canberra man will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning (28 November) charged with choke, suffocate or strangle another person. The man has also been charged with forcible confinement, three counts of common assault and two counts of destroy/damage property.

Legislation regarding strangulation was amended last year to better protect victims. In the first half of this year, ACT Policing investigated 22 reports under this new offence.

Detective Acting Sergeant Jason Taylor of ACT Policing’s Family Violence Team said victim safety and offender accountability is at the core of ACT Policing’s focus on family violence.

“To choke, suffocate or strangle another person, whether or not you render that person unconscious, is an incredibly serious offence and police will respond accordingly,” Acting Sergeant Taylor said.

If you are a victim of family violence, ACT Policing is here to help.
