Operation Rolling Thunder underway for heavy vehicles

Today, Thursday 1 February 2018, ACT Policing are joining the NSW Police Force in Operation Rolling Thunder, focusing on heavy vehicle safety and compliance.

ACT Policing, ACT Road Transport Authority, NSW Roads and Maritime Services, as well as NSW, Victorian, Queensland and South Australian police are all performing their part in this initiative.

This operation will be targeting heavy vehicles, after a horrific two day period from Monday, 15 January 2018 until Tuesday, 16 January 2018 where three unrelated heavy vehicle crashes occurred in NSW. These incidents resulted in the tragic deaths of five people.

This operation is targeting the safety of every heavy vehicle, ensuring they are safe and compliant, and the drivers are not driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Acting Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said “Although the majority of heavy vehicle drivers and operators comply with legislative requirements, this operation will highlight those who fail to comply with safety standards and road rules”.

“We expect all drivers and riders to be responsible and in control of their vehicle at all times. The ACT road toll currently stands at one and that is one too many.”
