P-platers have licences suspended during double demerit period

Two P-plater's have had their licences suspended over the weekend after engaging in dangerous behaviour on the roads. 

About 4.45pm on Sunday, 31 December 2023, members from ACT Road Policing observed the driver of a Holden Commodore on their mobile phone.

After stopping the vehicle and speaking to the driver, licence checks identified the 23-year-old Fraser woman as a provisional licence holder.

The driver was issued with an infringement notice for $632 for using a mobile phone while driving. Due to the double demerit period, the driver also accrued 8 demerit points, leading to the provisional licence being suspended.

Shortly after on Sunday afternoon, officers from Road Policing stopped a second P-plate driver on William Hovell Drive who they witnessed driving at 140km/h in a signposted 90km/h zone.

The 18-year-old Yarralumla man was issued with an Immediate Suspension Notice, suspending his right to drive in the ACT for three months, as well as a fine of $1,841.

ACT Policing want to take this opportunity to remind all drivers that road safety is everybody’s responsibility.

Driver distraction and excessive speeding puts drivers, passengers, and other road users at risk and could have tragic consequences for all involved.
