Police call for caution after woman hurt in hooning incident

ACT Policing is investigating an incident where a woman was injured after confronting a driver allegedly doing burnouts on Theodore Oval.

About 6.20pm Tuesday, 18 May 2021, the woman approached the driver, who then allegedly drove deliberately at her. The woman received leg injuries, and was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.

The vehicle was described as a dark green or blue four-wheel-drive, with several blue-tinted driving lights on the front. The vehicle may have been bearing NSW number plates.

Police are seeking witnesses to the incident or dash cam footage of the vehicle leaving the area.

This incident serves as a reminder that while reporting crime is important, doing so safely is the first priority.

Detective Acting Superintendent ACT Road Policing, Donna Hofmeier said that while police have asked people to report dangerous driving behaviour as part of the traffic focus this month, nobody should put themselves in harm’s way when doing so.

“We do want Canberrans to report dangerous driving when they see it. We don’t want anyone to get hurt in the process,” said Detective Acting Superintendent Hofmeier.

“Get as much information as you can, such as the make and model of the vehicle, the registration, the colour, and any other distinguishing features. If you can get a video, that can be helpful too.

“I don’t recommend the general public involve themselves in a confrontation, as situations can quickly get out of hand. Stay somewhere safe and call the police on 131 444 or Triple Zero if lives are at risk.”
