Police lay 22 charges against three disqualified drivers

Charged with multiple offences #2

Three men will face the ACT Magistrates Court today after ACT Policing arrested them following unrelated incidents.

The first arrest occurred in the Gungahlin Town Centre, where a 38-year-old Gungahlin man was arrested about 4.10pm yesterday (Friday, 10 March 2023) after officers observed a maroon BMW having mechanical issues. The car had no rear number plate and a paper, hand-drawn front plate reading “PERM1T”.

Police checks revealed the vehicle had been unregistered since January 2022, and that the driver’s licence was disqualified.

The man was also charged with the alleged theft of a motor scooter from Turner in November 2022.

About 4.40pm yesterday, officers in Belconnen observed a blue Holden Commodore with stolen number plates attached.

When the vehicle stopped, officers approached in and placed the driver, a 42-year-old man, under arrest for possession of stolen property. Checks discovered the man’s licence had been disqualified in 2005 and that he had not held a licence since. The vehicle had been unregistered since May 2021.

During a search of the vehicle, police located another stolen number plate.

About 12.15am today (Saturday, 11 March 2023) police attempted to stop a black Honda motorcycle in McKellar. The rider failed to stop and accelerated away.

Officers observed the motorcycle again about 12.21am in Spofforth Street, Holt, where the rider again failed to stop when directed, and a short time later on Parkwood Road, where the rider lost control in a paddock.

Police checks confirmed the motorcycle was unregistered, uninsured, and had number plates issued to another vehicle attached. The rider, a 29-year-old Crestwood (NSW) man, was found to be disqualified from holding a licence until May 2026. Police will also allege the man was in possession of approximately 1 gram of methylamphetamine.

Altogether, the men will face 22 charges in court today.

The 38-year-old has been charged with driving an unregistered vehicle, and an uninsured vehicle, driving a motor vehicle without consent, two counts of disqualified driving, using a number plate not properly issued, unlawful possession of stolen property, unlicenced driving, and use of a plate calculated to deceive.

The 42-year-old will answer to two counts of unlawful possession of stolen property, disqualified driving, driving an unregistered vehicle, and an uninsured vehicle, and using a number plate not properly issued.

The 29-year-old, who was arrested while on bail, will face charges of failing to stop for police, disqualified driving, driving an unregistered vehicle, and an uninsured vehicle, possession of a drug of dependence, and using a number plate not properly issued.
