ACT Policing is pleased that Australia Day revelers in the Nation’s Capital celebrated in a safe and responsible manner yesterday (Thursday 26 January 2017).

ACT Policing provided dedicated patrols to the Australia Day 2017 Celebrations including the Aussie Day Breakfast at Stage 88, the National Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony and the live entertainment and evening fireworks at Regatta Point.

Police were not required to respond to any major incidents and there were no arrests. Police took two young people into protective custody for intoxication and returned them to the care of a parent or guardian.

Police attended the protest march from King George Terrace, Parkes, to Parliament House to escort the protesters and ensure minimal disruption to traffic along the route. The protest was peaceful and there were no issues during the march.

While there were no major collisions on ACT roads during Australia Day, police will continue to target dangerous driving behaviour throughout Canberra today and over the weekend.

Drivers are reminded that double demerits will remain in effect until the last moment of Sunday night (29 January) for all speeding, seatbelt and mobile phone offences. An additional demerit point applies for all other traffic offences.
