Police release new road safety video

The Fatal Five

ACT policing today released the latest video in the ’Who Are You Rushing To Meet?’ campaign.

The video is the latest in the hard-hitting campaign launched in November 2020, and it portrays a scene where a police officer at a residential front door relays the news that a person has died in a collision.

At the video release today, ACT Policing Superintendent Road Policing and Emergency Management and Planning, Corey Heldon said police need to continue the ’Who Are You Rushing To Meet?’ campaign.

“Unfortunately, police need to keep repeating this message. We do this because we don’t want to attend serious collisions due to people driving at excessive speeds, or driving under the influence,” Superintendent Heldon said.

“Already in 2021, ACT Policing members have had to deliver heart-breaking news to the families of four people who have died in road collisions.

“When we ask ‘Who Are You Rushing To Meet?’ we want drivers to think about the people they could meet if they choose to speed. These are the police, fire fighters and ambulance officers at a collision, the trauma doctors and nurses who operate on the injured in hospital, or in the worst case scenario, a funeral director.”

The video launch coincided with the announcement of ACT Policing’s Traffic Focus for April, the ‘Fatal Five’, the five most common contributing factors to fatal vehicle collisions that occur on ACT roads.

The Fatal Five are:

  • Speeding
  • Alcohol and drug impaired driving
  • Not wearing a seatbelt
  • Intersections; and
  • Driving whilst distracted

This campaign forms part of the joint ACT Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 which prioritises a Vision Zero approach to road safety.

Throughout the year, the multi-agency road safety strategy targets specific issues and behaviours which contribute to death and serious injuries on Canberra's roads, with driver distraction among those concerns.
