Police warn of fraudulent cheques
ACT Policing is investigating several reports of fraudulent bank cheques used in the private sale of vehicles this month (July).
Police have so far received three reports, and suspect there may be more incidences not yet reported to police. In two of these incidents, the sellers have accepted the cheques, which have later bounced. In the third incident, the seller has refused to accept the cheque and contacted police.
Police are urging the community to take precautions when accepting cheques. Some tips which may assist in detecting a fraudulent cheque include:
- asking the buyer for identification and making sure the identification offered is current and matches their physical description,
- checking the signature on the cheque matches the signature on the identification,
- ensuring the buyer signs the cheque in your presence,
- ensuring that the cheque is dated correctly,
- checking there are no changes on the cheque,
- checking the figures match the amount in writing.
If you suspect the cheque is fraudulent, do not accept it. Take note of the individual’s appearance and any transportation used, and report the incident to police on 131 444.
