Police warning: dangers of flooded waterways and drains

ACT Policing has issued a warning to the community to stay clear of drains and fast-moving waterways with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting heavy rainfalls over the next 24 hours.

The Bureau of Meteorology is estimating between 40 and 60 millimeters of rain could fall in the Nation’s Capital today.   

Officer in Charge of Police Search and Rescue, Station Sergeant Steve Cooke said the current weather forecast was a timely reminder of the hazardous and unpredictable nature of flood waters, and the dangers associated with heavy rainfall.

“Our message to the public is to stay away from flooded drains or waterways during wet weather conditions and straight after them. Don’t risk your life or let your friends risk theirs by crossing floodways or drains during heavy rain,” Station Sergeant Cooke said.

“Parents are also reminded to ensure that children are not playing in flood-prone waterways, watercourses and drains as water levels can rise quickly.

“While we have a trained swift water rescue and dive capacity to help rescue people, we don't want people to be in the situation where they need these services.”

“Floodwater can be deeper and flow faster than it looks on the surface. It can also cover drains and erode surfaces that you cannot see.”

“Never drive, ride or walk through flood water. Be aware of river crossing closures and never attempt to cross when a closure is in place.”

Police are reminding Canberra drivers to drive according to the wet and slippery road conditions.  Slow down, turn on head lights and increase stopping distances.
