Prioritise car security this winter

ACT Policing is reminding the public to prioritise car security as winter approaches.

Motor vehicle break-ins and thefts are often opportunistic crimes, which rise over the winter period.

Superintendent Stephen Turnbull said simple precautionary measures can decrease the likelihood of a vehicle being damaged or stolen.

“Ensure your car doors and boot are secured and locked, and all windows are closed. Don’t leave valuables in your car, including your wallet or phone, even if your car is locked,” said Superintendent Turnbull.

“Never leave a running vehicle unattended or unsecured, even if you are defrosting your windscreen. Unfortunately this can be the perfect opportunity for theft.”

Anyone who witnesses suspicious or unusual activity is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the website. Information can be provided anonymously.

In the event of vehicle damage or theft, contact Police on 131 444 and provide:

• registration number
• make
• model
• colour
• distinguishing features
• time and place of the offence.
