Public information leads to synthetic drugs seizure

ACT Policing has seized a quantity of synthetic cannabinoids during simultaneous search warrants executed on three retail outlets throughout Canberra this morning (Monday, 19 May).

About 10am, Drug and Organised Crime detectives together with members from Tuggeranong General Duties, executed Crimes Act search warrants after receiving information from the public via Crime Stoppers.

During the search of three retail outlets in Belconnen, Calwell and Wanniassa police seized 520 various brands and sized packets of synthetic cannabinoids.
The value of the synthetic cannabinoids is estimated to be $25 000.

A number of persons are assisting police with their inquiries. Investigations are ongoing.

Detective Sergeant Shane Scott said information from the public was critical in the success of the drugs seized this morning.

“This incident demonstrates how important information from the public to Crime Stoppers can be,” Detective Sergeant Scott said.

Detective Sergeant Shane Scott reminded ACT business owners that they have a responsibility to be aware of the content of products they are selling.

“All Canberrans need to be aware that the sale and use of synthetic drugs in the ACT is illegal,” Detective Sergeant Scott said.

“If business owners are unsure of the content of their products then they need to consider removing them from their store completely or seek advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration.”

ACT Penalties of up to five years in prison and/or fines of up to $55 000 for persons and $275 000 for businesses may apply if the substances are proven to be illegal.
